Both Bangkok airport BKK Suvarnabhumi and DMK Don Muang have flights to CNX Chiang Mai. It takes 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes to travel the 600 km between the two cities.

All the airlines listed above run 8 to 12 flights a day both  directions. Price varies from 1500 Baht to 3000 Baht. Be aware that the low cost airline Air Asia charge an extra for checking luggage.

Update January 2014: Thai Lion Air offers 4 flights/day both directions.

Bangkok to Chiang Mai via bus is a long journey. Count about 10 hours. Here you have numerous options. Several companies run this route, from all those the transport company stand out a bit.  They have a VIP bus I would call VIP extra bacon, with la-z-boy style seats.  Overall this company is well known and trustworthy. Train from Hua Lamphong (Bangkok) to Chiang Mai
